Many factors influence how well a steam trap can do its job getting condensate, air, and carbon dioxide out of the steam system as quickly as they accumulate. If a trap does not match the application, improperly sized or installed incorrectly, your steam system won’t get maximum value from a trap … no matter how good the trap itself is!

When properly integrated into the system, however, a steam trap will provide:

  • Minimal steam loss

  • Long life and dependable operation

  • Corrosion resistance

  • Air venting

  • Carbon dioxide venting

  • Operation against back pressure

  • Freedom from dirt problems

The TLV Free Float Steam Trap

TLV Free Float Steam Traps revolutionized fluid control technology. More than 30 years have passed since TLV introduced the free float concept to the steam industry. Since then, TLV’s Free Float Traps and other innovative technologies have enabled users to achieve exceptional performance in facilities worldwide.

The failure of mechanical steam traps usually corresponds to their number of moving parts. Free Float Traps have only one moving part – the Float. Compared to complex mechanical traps Free Float traps provide fewer failures, longer service life, and increased process efficiency.

The First Choice for Process Efficiency – the Reasons are Simple

The TLV Free Float adjusts quickly to changes in condensate flow, ensuring rapid discharge and maximum process efficiency. It is unaffected by back pressure and ideal wherever condensate is recovered. The precision ground float provides an infinite number of contact surfaces with the valve seat ensuring little wear and a long reliable life. The reasons to choose a TLV Free Float trap include:

  • Process Efficiency

  • Energy Conservation

  • Long Life

  • Integral Strainer

  • Improved Air Venting

TLV Thermodyne Steam Traps

Designed for top performance and durability, the Thermodyne effectively drains steam mains, branches, and tracer lines to keep your plant operating at peak efficiency. The following unique features make the TLV Thermodyne trap the world’s most efficient thermodynamic disc steam trap:

Bimetal Air Vent Ring

To reach full operating efficiency, systems must purge air and condensate from steam lines. Conventional traps require manual blow down with bypass valves. The bimetal ring vents traps at start-up and prevents air binding without the use of bypass valves.

Jacketed Pressure Chamber

The air or steam jacketed pressure chamber prevents no-load actuation and chattering from radiant heat loss by insulating the trap from ambient temperatures -- conserving steam and prolonging the life of the disc and seat.

Lapped Disc

Conventional valve discs are round ground or even slit to prevent air binding and waste steam by leaking and no-load actuation. With the bimetal ring, the valve disc can be lapped instead of ground and mirror polished to a high tolerance. The resulting tight seal saves steam and lengthens the operation cycle providing an extended service life.

TLV Balanced Pressure Thermostatic Steam Traps

TLV’s L-Series Thermostatic traps have a patented nickel based alloy steel diaphragm X-element designed to Fail Open and protect against unwanted condensate accumulation. TLV traps are manufactured with high quality to ensure excellent performance and life. However, failure of any mechanical device is inevitable and the consequences can be severe. Steam traps can either Fail Open--causing energy loss--or, Fail Closed, accumulating condensate.

Failing closed can allow condensate to back-up into the steam main and carry downstream with severe consequences including: water hammer, low process temperatures, and solidification of product in steam traced line. The Fail Open feature reduces the danger of production or operation losses and provides a safer working environment.

The X-Element internal chamber contains a liquid fill with a saturation temperature slightly lower than the saturation temperature of water. With rising condensate temperature, the fill evaporates. The resulting increase in internal pressure expands the diaphragms to close the valve. When the condensate temperature cools, the fill condenses, reducing the resulting pressure and allowing the diaphragms to contract for the valve to open.

Maintainable steel bodied, thermostatic traps have a high air venting capability and light to medium condensate capacity for steam mains, tracing and process equipment. The following features of the TLV thermostatic traps offer excellent performance and longevity:

  • Patented Fail Open design for critical service performance

  • Hardened stainless steel valve head and seat for maximum life

  • Positive open-close operation reduces valve wear

  • Pressure to close valve design increases longevity

Valve, triple diaphragms, and casing have matching contours for high superheat capability and water hammer resistance

  • Large screen area promotes trouble free service

  • Self-draining for freeze protection in vertical installations

  • Flat mirror-finish valve head provides tightest sealing for energy efficiency

  • Compact and capable of self-adjusting to wide flow variations

  • Cleanable and in-line repairable design lowers maintenance costs

TLV Regulators and Control Valves

For decades, the conventional designs of Reducing Valves seemed good enough; but manufacturers increasingly demanded more effective process control for improved product quality. TLV's response is COSPECT – a remarkable Pressure Regulator, Separator, and Steam Trap three-in-one design.

The wide variation in primary pressure in conventional valves causes the secondary pressure to drift – producing temperature variations that can generate inconsistent product quality. Three aspects of the COSPECT design provide dry saturated steam at a constant pressure and temperature for improved product consistency and quality.

  • COSPECT Three-in-One Design Breakthrough

  • SAS – Patented Shock Absorbing Spherical Piston delivers stable secondary pressure

  • SCE – Super Cyclonical Effects Separator provides dry saturated secondary steam by effectively removing condensate and scale with a 98% separation efficiency extending the service life of the valve

  • SST – Super Steam Trap continuous discharge trap instantly removes separated condensate and provides for a seal-tight shut-off even under no-load conditions

The technologically advanced COSPECT provides accurate control and steam conditioning to maximize process steam system performance. TLV offers additional pressure reducing valves, automatic multi-control valves, and multi-controllers to address your various process applications.

TLV Cyclone Separator Traps

The TLV cyclone separator traps remove condensate entrained in steam and air with 98% efficiency. These traps feature the combination of a super cyclone-effect separator with a free Float trap and can deliver high quality air or steam up to a 99.8% dryness. The traps are available in various sizes and models to accommodate your various steam and air applications. The cyclone separators are also available separately and can be used for steam, air and other gas streams.

TLV Steam Trap Testing Equipment

Steam Trap management is a very important issue facing most plant managers today. TLV offers two Steam Trap Management Systems that can help you establish your own cost effective steam trap management system - the TrapMan and the PenCheck. Both of these products will provide a measurement and analysis system for diagnosing steam trap operation, quantifying steam leakage and methods to analyze and manage data.

TLV TrapMan - Model TM5 TrapManager

The TrapMan is a complete measurement and analysis system for the effective management of your entire steam trap population. TrapMan consists of two main components:

  • TM5 hardware – a precise ultrasonic and temperature testing instrument which stores and accesses diagnosis technology for making consistent performance judgments

  • TrapManager software – a comprehensive windows based program designed to enable extensive data analysis of the entire trap population

TLV PenCheck System Package

The PenCheck System Package is a complete measurement and analysis system for the effective management of small to medium trap populations. The PenCheck consists of the following components:

  • PK1 Diagnostic Unit – a pocket sized precision testing instrument for simultaneous ultrasonic vibration and temperature measurement

Steam Strainers

Pipeline Strainers are suitable for use in a variety of fluid systems such as:

  •   air

  •   chemical

  •   condensate

  •   gas

  •   oil

  •   petroleum

  •   water

Strainers protect valves, pumps, compressors, condensers, flow meters, nozzles, steam traps, and other vulnerable equipment. Screens are stainless steel or monel with spark-plug-like, clad, non-asbestos gaskets that provide reliable sealing with minimal loading. By guiding - not crushing - screens into bodies, caps and covers, you can be confident of particle retention.
